Observation Narrative
The site is a low, broad levee along the Willis River in the south-central Piedmont. This habitat is probably flooded temporarily every 1-3 years. An extensive, seasonally flooded backswamp with Fraxinus pensylvanica - Acer rubrum / Saururus cernuum Forest occupies the adjacent, inner portion of the floodplain. The levee supports a very mixed forest with a well-developed herb layer. DOF indicate the stand was last cut around 1916. At least nine tree species are present in the overstory and sub-canopy, while Asimina triloba and Carpinus caroliniana form a dense but tall shrub layer. The herb layer is dominated by sedges, although several forbs are also abundant.
